Major player trade sends DC's Pope and Moreno to MetroStars
The MetroStars have acquired two-time U.S. World Cup defender Eddie Pope, high-scoring striker Jaime Moreno and veteran midfielder Richie Williams from D.C. United in exchange for a package including defender Mike Petke, the MetroStars' second 2003 MLS SuperDraft first-round pick (number five overall) and an allocation.
LA Galaxy's new signing earns FIFA World Cup Bronze Boot award
Los Angeles Galaxy and Korean World Cup defender Hong Myung Bo was presented the adidas Bronze Ball award by FIFA for his outstanding individual performance at the 2002 World Cup in Korea/Japan at the FIFA World Player Gala in Madrid, Spain today. The Galaxy signed Hong, the first Korean player in MLS history, on Monday November 4, 2002 from his club team the Pohang Steelers in Korea's K-League.
Landon Donovan to remain with Earthquakes through 2004

Brian McBride signs multi-year deal with Crew, MLS

Wizards announce historic South African tour
Kansas City Wizards General Manager Curt Johnson announced today that the team has signed an agreement that will involve a three-game preseason exhibition tour of South Africa in February of 2003. The historic deal will mark the first time a Major League Soccer team has traveled to South Africa for preseason training. The trip, which will take place from February 4th through February 17th, will feature three exhibition matches against top teams from the South African Premiership.

Twenty-six players waived, three selected in waiver draft
Eight of Major League Soccer's 10 teams made roster moves in preparation for the 2003 season as 26 players were made available for the MLS Waiver Draft scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 6 at 12:00 p.m. (ET) via conference call from the League's headquarters in New York. Among the 26 players eligible for selection are MLS' All-Time leading goal scorer Roy Lassiter (88 goals), who was waived by D.C. Seventy-eight show for Crew open tryouts

Galaxy acquire Korean defender Hong Myung Bo
The Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer (MLS) have acquired the rights to Korean defender Hong Myung Bo, it was announced today by Galaxy Vice President/General Manager Doug Hamilton. Hong, the first Korean player in MLS history, joins the Galaxy from his club team the Pohang Steelers in Korea's K-League. No financial terms of the MLS contract were announced.
2003 MLS SuperDraft slated for January 17 in Kansas City
Major League Soccer announced that the League's annual SuperDraft will be held on January 17, 2003 at the Kansas City Convention Center beginning at 3:30 p.m. ET. Columbus wins 2002 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup
The Columbus Crew won the 2002 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup tonight with a 1-0 victory over the defending champion Los Angeles Galaxy in front of 6,054 chilly fans at the Columbus Crew Stadium in Columbus, Ohio. The victory for the Crew came courtesy of a 30th minute first-half goal from forward Freddy Garcia as teammate Brian West’s right side cross was deflected by Galaxy goalkeeper Matt Reis to the Guatemalan forward, who got the rebound and fired a low shot from seven yards out for the only goal of the game.

Los Angeles wins 2002 MLS Championship on Ruiz golden goal
MLS Honda MVP Carlos Ruiz netted a golden goal in sudden death overtime as the Los Angeles Galaxy captured their first MLS Cup championship with a dramatic 1-0 victory over the New England Revolution at Gillette Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The championship for the Galaxy came in their fourth appearance in the title game. Los Angeles, the No. 1 seed of the 2002 postseason and Western Conference champions, had been on the losing end of the 1996, 1999 and 2001 championship games, which included an overtime loss to the San Jose Earthquakes last year.
Tab Ramos receives MLS Commissioner's award
Major League Soccer announced today that Tab Ramos, widely considered the best American soccer player of all-time, is the recipient of the 2002 Commissioner's Award. The honor recognizes the person or organization that has provided inspiration through unselfish work and commendable leadership in their daily lives. New England Revolution forward Taylor Twellman has been selected as Major League Soccer's Player of the Week for the week ending September 8, 2002. Twellman notched a natural hat trick to lead the Revolution past D.C. United 3-0 Saturday night in a must-win game at Gillette Stadium.
Twellman hat trick carries New England over DC United
Forward Taylor Twellman netted a hat trick and set a new club record for goals in a season as the New England Revolution registered a critical 3-0 victory over D.C. United at Gillette Stadium on Saturday night. The hat trick was his first of the year and it increased his season total to 20 goals, tying him for the League lead with the Los Angeles Galaxy's Carlos Ruiz, who also entered weekend play with 20 goals. The six points on thenight were, however, good enough for Twellman (20g, 5a = 45 points) to surpass Ruiz for the overall scoring lead moving four points ahead of the Guatemalan forward (20g, 1a = 41 points). Twellman's 20 goals also set a new club record for goals in a single season, surpassing Raul Diaz Arce's mark of 18 goals in 1998.
San Jose tops Columbus on golden own-goal
The San Jose Earthquakes maintained their grasp on the League lead with a 4-3 overtime victory over the Columbus Crew Saturday night at Spartan Stadium. A wild and wide-open regulation period saw Crew forward Edson Buddle lead Columbus into the tiebreaker, but a freak own goal gave the Quakes the overtime win.

The philosophy of building attendance one fan at a time continues to pay dividends for the Kansas City Wizards. So far this season, the team has hosted three of the top six largest crowds in team history and with only one regular season game remaining, the Wizards are poised to become the first team in MLS history to increase their average attendance for four consecutive seasons.
